Meet the Trustees
Len Cantor - Chairman
"As a founding member of Steps and Chairman of the Trustees since its inception, I can testify to the extremely valuable service it provides for our children and their parents. I have been only too pleased to offer my own services and delighted to witness the great progress Steps has made during my time in office."
Len is also an Emeritus Professor of Loughborough University and President of the Leicestershire branch of the campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).
Rosemary Conley CBE - Patron
"I was honoured to be asked to be Patron from when the charity was originally formed and, latterly, delighted to become a Trustee of Steps. I am passionate about the wonderful work that Steps achieves and how the children and families are helped and supported by the remarkable team that work there. Most of my charitable efforts are devoted to Steps because of the incredible contribution it makes to the children and their families who attend. Steps is a very special place."
Heather Crate - President
Trustee Heather gained a BEd and worked in education for 20 years. When her eldest grandson was born with cerebral palsy, Heather saw the benefits to him of the conductive education he had received at the Peto Institute in Hungary and Rutland House in Nottingham. In 1994, Heather’s family, along with three other families, decided to set up a centre in Loughborough and Steps was formed. Heather was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Loughborough University in July 2004 for her work with Steps.
Mark Jermy - Trustee
I have been involved with Steps after having my ‘arm twisted’ to assist professionally as an Architect in the planning and delivery of ITV’s “Challenge Rosemary” Steps’ renovation project. Due to the extraordinary goodwill and efforts of many individuals and companies, the project culminated in the successful initial refurbishment of the centre in 2007. The sheer joy and pleasure seen in the faces of the children when they achieve their personal goals, along with the enthusiasm of the staff, make Steps an inspirational organisation, of which I am proud to willingly serve as a Trustee."
Tony Carr - Trustee
Tony was born in the North East and moved to Leicestershire in 2006 with his work. Married to Su with one daughter, Ellie, who has attended Steps since 2007, Tony joined Steps' Trustees' group initially as the parent representative before he was invited to join as a Trustee in November 2008. Tony is a senior Manager at the Caterpillar plant in Desford - who nominated Steps as their Charity of the Year for 2008. He is a member of the 'Caterpillar Cares' charity team which carried out fundraising for Steps in 2008 and 2009.
John Montague - Trustee
John Montague is Group Chief Executive of The TREES group based in Leicester. His involvement as a Trustee of Steps started five years ago with regards to the new school building in Shepshed. Over the last five years John and all his employees have taken great pride and derived great benefit from supporting the mission and vision of Steps to deliver a high quality environment and support for parents and children.
Andy Reed MP - Trustee
"How I became a Trustee for Steps can be traced by the inspiration provided by Heather Crate! Whilst I had worked alongside Steps and supported them as part of my parliamentary duties, when I was asked to join and support the organisation directly, I jumped at the opportunity. I know the work of Steps goes from strength to strength, is very much needed and valued, and makes a huge difference to the lives of so many individuals. I'm thrilled to be able to play a small part in this great team!"
